Introduction

Chiang Mai

is Thailand's principal northern city and often referred to as the “Rose of the North”. Chiang Mai is also the provincial capital of a largely mountainous province, which is some 20,000 square kilometers in area.

Chiang Mai was the capital of Lanna Thai (Kingdom of A Million Rice Fields), the first independent Thai kingdom within the fabled Golden Triangle. Chiang Mai flourished as a major religious, cultural and trading centre until 1556 when a Burmese invasion reduced it to a vassal state. The Burmese were expelled in 1785, whereupon Lanna Thai once again became part of northern Thailand.

The old city of Chiang Mai with its fascinating indigenous cultural identity such as diverse dialects, cuisine, architecture, traditional values, festivals, handicrafts and classical dances is a prime location in its own right. In addition, the presence of hill tribes and their wealth of unique cultures enhance Chiang Mai’s distinctive diversity.

In relation to the rest of Thailand, Chiang Mai is considered to be quite cool. The average yearly temperature is 25.4oC, with the highest at 40.1oC and the lowest at 8.7oC.
