Introduction

Chiang Rai

Some 785 kms away from Bangkok is the northern most province of Thailand. Scenic dense mountains, river valleys, hot springs, waterfalls, ancient settlements and historical sites, hill tribe villages such as Karen, Akha, Lisu, Meo and Muser, can all be found in Chiang Rai.

The province became famous because of the renowned "Golden Triangle" where Myanmar, Laos and Thailand converge at the banks of the Mekong River and  is thus the gateway to Myanmar, Laos and Southern China.

The northern most town of Thailand, Mae Sai on the Ruak River is the border to Myanmar. The city of Chiang Rai was once the capital of the Lanna Kingdom and the city's most honored temple is Wat Phra Kaew.

On this tour around Chiang Rai and to the area further north, we include a nice boat trip on the Mekong river and you even get a chance to visit a market on the Laotian side of the river. We visit The Golden Triangle with a beautiful view from Thailand to Burma and Laos and also the northern most point in Thailand Mae Sai at the Border to Burma. You will also meet some of the most colorful hill tribes in Thailand at Doi Mae Salong mountain range where some of the tribes are working in the local tea plantations.

Doi Mae Salong, originally a settlement of the Kuo Min Tang army who fled China after the 1949 revolution. General Tuan one of the troop leaders and his soldiers got permission from the Thai government to settle down  in this area as normal civilians. Today there is a memorial place to visit, made for General Tuan.

Mae Salong is now a pretty little China town with tea plantations and hill tribes around like Akha, Mien, Lisu, Hmong and some more settlers from China's Yunnan Province. A very attractive place with great panoramas.
