Health

For visits to Thailand it is recommended that you consult your medical doctor for advice on what is required of vaccinations before traveling to Thailand.

Thailand in general has an excellent health system and especially the private hospitals are of world class standard, providing all services at very competitive prices. Thailand has thus in recent years developed a large health care industry that service foreign visitors from many countries due to its high standards and good service level.

Medical check ups can with advantage be done during holidays in Thailand. Likewise dental work and the prescription and purchase of new glasses and lenses can be done with considerable savings compared to Northern Europe.

Although regulated, the sale of medicine is much more loosely administrated than we are used to in Europe. Several pharmacies sell drugs which we usually are only able to buy with a prescription. It is strongly recommended, however, that you refrain from the temptation of purchasing medicine without proper advice from a medical doctor. Medicine should only be purchased at hospital outlets or from licensed pharmacies to avoid counterfeit products.

As in other tropical climates, it is important to ensure that you intake plenty of water and sufficient salt to compensate for the increased perspiration. Generally salt is not added to Thai dishes, but fish sauce with high salt content is used on the table to spice up dishes. As this fish sauce also contains spicy chilies many tourists refrain from using this and should thus remember to compensate otherwise with salt intake. Electrolyte beverages are widely available and are recommended on a regular basis if you have many outdoor activities during your stay, but remember to combine them with plenty of drinking water, Generally the tab water will not be suitable for visitors to drink. However, drinking water is widely provided in hotels and sold throughout the country in bottled versions at low prices.

It is recommended to use mosquito lotion to protect against mosquito bites both during day and night time. Whereas most people believe it is only the Malaria carrying mosquitoes in the evening that can cause a health threat, the fact is that the mosquitoes carrying dengue fever are a much larger health risk. The mosquitoes carrying dengue fever bite in the day time and are generally a city problem, whereas the malaria risk is relatively low and mainly in remote jungle areas.
