Money & Credit Cards

     

 

Foreign currency: As from 24 February 2008, under the relevant Thai law, any foreigner who brings or takes an aggregate amount of foreign currency exceeding USD 20,000 or its equivalent into or out of the Kingdom of Thailand shall declare such amount of foreign currency to a customs officer. Failure to declare upon bringing foreign currency that exceeds the amount restricted by law or its equivalent out of or into the Kingdom of Thailand or making any false declaration to a customs officer is a criminal offence.

Thai currency: The amount of 50,000 baht or more must be reported on departure to customs. Those traveling to one of Thailand’s neighbouring countries are allowed to take up to 500,000 baht.

Coins: 25 and 50 satang; 1, 2, 5 and 10 baht.
Banknote
s: 10 (brown), 20 (green), 50 (blue), 100 (red), 500 (purple) and 1,000 (grey or brown) baht.

ATM or bank cash machines are widely available throughout the country.

Major foreign currencies can be exchanged for Thai baht with banks and authorized money changers. For buying baht, US dollars are the most readily acceptable, though travelers' cheques get a better rate than cash.

Major credit cards are also widely accepted in tourist centers. The most commonly accepted cards are Visa and Master Card, followed by Amex and Diners.

Bank hours: Monday to Friday 08:3015:30 hrs. (except public and bank holidays)

Major banks such as Bangkok Bank, Thai Farmers Bank and Siam Commercial Bank operate currency exchange centers in most tourist areas from 07:00 – 21:00 hrs. seven days a week including holidays.
